1200 A.D.: The State of Denmark is an elective monarchy; while priority of succession may be given to the King's eldest son, the next King still must be elected and confirmed by the high nobles.

As our play opens, the Royal Dane, King Hamlet, has died without warning and his younger brother, Claudius, has been elected King in the absence of King Hamlet's chosen and only son, Hamlet, Prince of Denmark. Prince Hamlet has been abroad, studying Philosophy in Germany at the University of Wittenberg. Prince Hamlet returns for his father's funeral to find his throne already taken; his mother, Gertrude, the Queen, engaged to this uncle; and war looming on the horizon with the son of the former King of Norway, Prince Fortinbras, who has sworn to retake lands lost by his late Father. And so we embark on the most famous of all plays: The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark.

Buckle up your seatbelts: it's going to be a bumpy ride.
